49 Mirror question

My grandfathers 49 F1 has this outside (drivers side) mirror, would it come from the factory stock or was it added on later? Also noted that the mirror, along with the inside rear view mirror have a "dark" background appearance. Maybe age has something to do with that?

The side mirror wouldn't have been "factory", but it could be a dealer add on or any number of aftermarket parts available at the time. One would have to pour through Ford accessory catalogs to see if a mirror that looked like that is listed.

The interior mirrors for these trucks was originally tinted like you observed. A forerunner to the day/night mirrors that came later to cut down on headlight glare from behind.

I can remember my Dad telling me that my Grandfather ordered the truck with a 226 6cyl, a heavy duty 3 speed & a 3.73 axle....so I guess the mirror was added by the dealer or maybe Gramps, along with a Harrison heater & turn signals too. Just basic stuff back 73 yeas ago, appreciate the info Wayne.

Yep, just basic stuff 73 years ago. Parts were acquired and installed from any number of places. You made due with whatever worked. Harrison was a GM brand, so it's quite likely your heater came used from something in a wrecking yard that your Gramps found. https://sites.google.com/site/vintag...ters-1935-1941
