Stupid question probably, but I just installed GS trans temp gauge. I didnt plan on hooking up power to the light, rarely ever drive it at night. #1 if the orange lighting wire is not hooked up, will it matter as far as the gauge working is concerned? I baffled how if its hooked up to a non dimmer light switch power out how it knows to dim when the lights are turned on??. #2, Turn on the key and the gauge does not move at all. I ran it for 10 mins in the garage with it in D to build a wee bit of heat and still no movement. Seem normal? I checked both power supplies and they are per instructions.
The dimming wire won't affect the gauge operation. I have the same gauge, I combined the orange wire and the yellow wire so it is always in "dim" mode and it's still too bright at night. When it first starts it up it the needle should do a full sweep as a check. If it's not doing that then either you don't have power/ground or the gauge is bad.
Good idea on the light wires. Its pretty bright but I havent driven at night yet. The original no working issue was due to the ground pin in the GS gauge was defective and pushed out of the plug enough to not make contact. Works fine now. I am curious to the 18 gauge wire only. I used what I had in the shop which was 14 gauge probably. Cruising around im at 140 pretty much all the time. The bigger wire has more resistance by a very small margin and wondered if it really makes enough difference.
I doubt it makes any difference considering the short wire run. 140 is about what I get normally, unloaded. The glowshift gauge indicates about 10* cooler than what Forscan reports but that could be due to where the measurements are taken within the transmission.
