Transmissions swap

I have a 1983 250 with the 300L6 and the granny gear 4 speed. However I know that the EFI 300 in the 90s had a 5 speed. What is the name of that transmission and what would I need to do for a conversion?

Mazda M5OD in 150s.

ZF 5er in 250 & up.

I think you have a mechanical clutch. These transmissions use a hydraulic clutch as found in '84 and up trucks. IIRC.

What axle do you have?

I'm not sure, it has drums brakes and it's a single cab long wheelbase 1983 F250.

Look at your clutch linkage under dash, on the firewall, and at the bell housing.

You'll see it as it's either rods and bars or master/ slave hydraulic cylinders and hoses.

From memory I believe its rods and bars and stuff which i assume is mechanical. Not sure how this changes things as far as a swap goes.

You can bring over the hydraulic clutch from a later truck.

The problem is that both 5-speed boxes have inbuilt hydraulic cylinders to release the clutch pressure plates.......but '83 & earlier trucks (except diesel & possibly 460) used mechanical linkages. So you would need to install a master cylinder & a hydraulic-version pedal assembly.

It's probably possible to modify the later transmissions to operate with the earlier linkage system, but I haven't heard of anyone doing so......switching to hydraulic would be a lot easier.

hi there , the truck I got the transmission from was a 95 f150 and it was bolted up to 300 EFI and name of the transmission is I think called M5OD from Mazda, I had to slide my transmission crossmember back 1/4 of an inch to accommodate the two pc with steady bearing and drive shaft, I also had to cut a hole in the fire wall for the clutch master cylinder and a hole in the floor for the transmission, because my truck is an 84 and the speedometer cable is mechanical and will not connect to the M5OD I also had to get a brake pedal assembly from an 88 bronco I think you will need the brake pedal assembly from the donor truck that you get the transmission from, I hope this helps you and good luck!

The Mazda is the lighter duty 5 speed. The zf is the heavier duty 5 speed found in the f250 and f350's. You could use either one but keep the intended use in mind.

Didnt Cory get one of his M5OD from a 250 truck?
Think it had a 351 motor.
I also think pre 93 still use a speedo cable

You would need to run the 80 - 88 clutch pedal as assy. but maybe you can change out the little arm that bolts to the end as they are clocked differently?
If not then the shaft but at that point just change out the whole assy.

80-86 clutch pedal assembly will work. They changed it in 1987.

I looked it up, a Mazda transmission was available in a f250. They don't say what engine though, and if it was a f250 or a f250hd. I have no proof, but suspect the M5OD was offered behind the 302 and possibly the 300 in the lighter duty f250. Just a guess though.

On the pedal yes 80 to 86 but I know if the arms on the end are different between linkage and hydraulic.
What I dont know is if the shaft the arm fits on is clocked differently?
I also want to say I remember something about the shafts might be different dia too.
That is why it would be best to just replace the whole pedal assy..

On the 250 or 250 HD is a good point and maybe Cory's transmission was from a 302?

I miss-spoke, the early ones were not hydraulic and will not work without modifications. I think the hydraulic started around 1983 or 84.
