Spoke with Rob at Summit Performance Transmissions for about 1/2 hour. He asked me a lot of questions first for the diagnosis, then about my use of the truck and future upgrades.
A billet TC is what he recommended for my usage. Said he could do the triple disk but for my needs and price tag it would be a waste of my money.
His standard build is guaranteed for up to 500hp with a 2 year unlimited km warranty.
I hadn’t considered the flex plate and will have that discussion with him on Tuesday morning when I drop off the truck.
triple disk give more holding power for acceleration and when using exhaust brake if you have done that mod. I run a mild 80 DD and 60 Tow tune and can feel the difference between a single and triple clutch. its not a requirement but a nice thing to do while you are doing..
as far as the flexplate i found cracks on one iwth 223K miles and far as i know OEM from factory.. summit make a racing plate that is super good.
Ill ask about the cost difference on the triple disk.
Flex plate was quite the deep dive as I followed all the links to related threads. Y2K makes an excellent point when it comes to the “billet” 💪 plate. Where does it flex… what gives???
Stamped it will be. Not sure who’s yet. Depends on what Rob has available.
Summit racing is south of me across the border with a week and a half for shipping. That ain’t happening. Transmission goes in on Tuesday.
My truck currently has 202,000 kms = 126,000 miles and in its life with me has only seen 70,000 kms = 43,500 miles in 19 years. The fact that it even needs a transmission already is surprising to me.
Directly from the transmission shop it’s going to SDK to have all the tunes modified to be back to Stock PMT2 shift strategy.
Billet flexplate is something that is used in racing,go for OEM style.
Ask Dan K,i'm sure that he confirms that triple disc TC is something that needs to be added.
I don't know why the tranny guy don't want you to have it..
When a torque converter spins, it swells in the longitudinal direction. That is, it grows in size between the engine and transmission. The flex plate allows for this movement. If the flex plate is too stiff, such as a billet flex plate, the engine's thrust bearings take the load. This tends to wear out the thrust bearings quickly, leading to an engine rebuild.
I’m not recommending a billet plate but have a question.
Won’t the TC “snout” just move into the transmission if the plate is stiff? Isn’t the TC endplay there to allow for the ballooning and heat growth?
I do think a stiffer plate will transfer more vibration and load to the crankshaft.
Personally I feel the slightly thicker Summit SFI plate is a good balance between longevity and performance due to seeing reports of OEM plates cracking. I’m not running it, just an opinion. And I understand it’s not an option for the OP.
