96 explorer trouble keeping idle

Hello I recently bought a 96 explorer as my daily.it has 206k miles on it.check light is on but I don’t know what for and I don’t have a scanner to check it.I asked the previous owner he said he didn’t know either.so when at a traffic in drive mode the car will start to shake and will try to stall out.if I switch it to neutral it helps a bit to try to stay steady at idle.it will also idle good for a bit in park and then it will try to stall again.I have changed the battery to a new one but that didn’t help much.there are no driving issues. Any help will be much appreciated.
