79 f 150 starter issues

Have a question I've been researching but still have not resolved. I recently did the 351 to 400 conversion on a 79 f150. Replaced stock ignition with petronix aftermarket stuff. I took it for its first test drive this past weekend. Everything worked great. I pulled into the shop to do some carb adjustments but when I shut it off it wouldn't restart. Bought a new starter ("old" one fried) and solenoid but no luck. I have tried bypassing solenoid, (solenoid checks out) checked coil, voltages, checked grounds, etc. but no luck. I have not bypassed the resistor wire yet but it's been darting fine until now. What am I missing. I admit wiring is not my strong suit so any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ryan

Are you saying it won't crank or it won't start?

Won't crank. Motor turns over by hand but starter drags whether it's in or out of the bell housing.

It started everyday for a few weeks in the shop while I was working on other things before the test drive. Timing was fine distributor didn't move. I feel like it's something electrical.

If jumping the solenoid won't crank it the things it could be are very few.

Bad Battery
Bad ground, are you grounded to the block from the battery?
Bad battery connections
Bad cable
Bad starter.

That's about it, it's just power to the starter no place for any mystery.

Lol....that's what I keep thinking. Battery is good, new battery terminals, grounded to block, I will double check the cables. I guess my next move is to return the brand new starter. Thanks

Has to be one of those parts or a connection of one of them.

If you have a breakdown tester clamp it on your starter cable and to ground and hit it. if it doesn't hold good load it's not your starter. if it does it is.

Red/blue to "s", brown to "I". Went through all the grounds today and checked for shorts in the wiring can't find anything. Maybe keyed ignition?? Very confused because it started right up every day for two weeks.

Easy check on the S terminal wire, test lamp and turn key to start. Shop manual from Ford has flow charts and they work great.

Jumping the solenoid means bypassing it, not messing with wires.

Make sure it's out of gear or in park. with a jumper cable, big pliers, a couple wrenches whatever you like jump from one side of the solenoid to the other, bypass it. if it doesn't crank see what I said above. if it does it's the solenoid or the wire between it and the key switch.
