My grandmother has a lemon of an '89 Bronco II, 2.9L, automatic, 4X4. She finally made the last payment on it and now it's running rough. I did a complete tune-up about a year ago to help it pass smog. When cold, the engine has an eratic RPM with almost a missing feel to it. A lot of unburnt fuel can be smelled. When put into reverse, the engine idles normally and has plenty of power. When put into drive and you step on the gas, it hesitates and then runs fine. I haven't had a chance to look at this particular problem because I was busy making the transfer case drop out of 4X4 mode that it got stuck in. Any suggestions before I start digging would be very useful. Thank you!
*The Haynes Repair Manual also has the procedures for testing*
