Transmission swap
in need of transmission work.
I have acquired a transmission, supposedly from a 1988 RANGER 4X4, (no idea of the engine size.) The code on it is E87A-PG, (Toyo Kogyo TK5) which according to the Ford catalog is NOT from a ranger, but supposedly from 1988 Bronco II 2WD?
(If so, then evidently, someone had replaced the original in the Ranger sometime in the past??)
Would you think that this transmission would "fit right in", with the exception of the different shifter (which hopefully will still work with the existing boot?), or will any modifications be required?
My assumption is that since I gather that all 2WD Bronco II used a dummy transfer case, with the same trans as 4X4, that if this IS in fact originally from a Bronco II that it should go right in as easy as another Mitsubishi would have??
Anyone else been thru this or a part of it?
Any input appreciated, as I'm not in a position to open a can of worms on this, if it won't go in without problems, I need to go to plan B...

the Toyo Kogyo TK5 was common to '83-'87 4x4 Rangers with 4-cylinder engines. I'm guessing the bell housing bolt pattern will be different going from a 2.3L into your 2.9L so it probably won't work. The Mazda M5OD bolt pattern matches from what I've read but the shifter location will be slightly different. I'll actually be pulling mine out later this month for a rebuild. There's a company offering remanufactured FM146's through Ebay for around $650, so that at least gives an idea of cost if you go that route. Maybe sell the Toyo on craigslist and look for an FM146 or M5OD?
