1990 F150 Ignition Switch replacement

I have a 1990 F150 with a failed ignition lock cylinder. I am seeking guidance on how to replace it. I can insert the key but the key will not turn at all toward the run position. I have already purchased a new ignition lock cylinder. My repair manual says that to replace the failed cylinder, the cylinder must have the key in it, must be turned to the run position, and then I can remove the steering wheel and slide out the ignition cylinder. Since I can not turn the key in the ignition cylinder, this replacement technique will not work. I welcome ideas on how to remove and replace the stuck cylinder. Thank you!
Greg

The ignition switch is on top of the steering column, down by the firewall. You put the key in the ignition lock cylinder. Those are two completely different parts. The switch is on two studs on the column. Remove the nuts then carefully lift up on the rod to disengage it from the switch. It is easier if you lower the column but is not necessary. Which one did you buy? Are you sure the ignition actuator didn’t break which is why you cannot turn the key far enough to get the truck to start?

Thank you. I misquoted the part that is not functioning. Thanks for the clarity. The lock cylinder will not turn when the key is in it.

the steering wheel has a lock in it to prevent wheel turning with key off. if you park with the steering turned, it can put enough pressure on the lock to prevent turning the key. while turning the key, try pulling HARD on the steering wheel side to side like you are turning with the engine not running.
wiggling the key while in the key cylinder helps sometimes too.
to replace the key cylinder you do not remove steering wheel.
you remove the lower steering column cover. under the key cylinder you will see i small hole.
with the key turned to run position you stick a small nail or pin punch into the hole and push up to release the cylinder retainer, and pull the key and cylinder out.
slip the new key and cylinder in, and turn off. this will lock the new cylinder in place.

If you still can't turn the key after tjc transport's suggestions, you may be left with the same procedure as if you didn't have the key.

In that case, you will have to drill out the lock cylinder. Start with a small drill bit and work your way up. Try to be as centered as possible. It makes a bit of a mess.

I think I followed the instructions in this video when I had to do it (my truck came with a screwdriver as the "key")

Thank you very much. I have a new problem - the key won't go in all the way. I sprayed WD-40 into the cylinder and tried repeatedly to rock the steering wheel to the left and right, while trying to seat the key. For some reason, it just won't go in the last little bit. Any suggestions? Thank you. Greg

Tumbler not lined up? Could the chrome/ black piece be loose not allowing you to get the key in the rest of the way?
