7.3 running rough sometimes, but not always

Hey guys, I’ve got a 95 powerstroke, lately it’s been doing this thing where it sounds like it’s missing or something and shakes my whole truck, then I rev it a little and it goes back down and idles normal and runs fine, usually when it’s in park it runs fine, but as soon as I put it in drive and go a little ways, probably like 30 yards or something, my check engine light comes back on and starts running really bad again, my scanner isn’t working with it but before I go and buy a new one I wanted to see if any of you have had experience with this? It seems like a sensor of some sort beings that it sometimes is fine in idle but then ends up running rough in drive and occasionally even in park? Hopefully that all makes sense. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Check the wiring harness to the glow plugs/injectors where they plug into the valve covers. Look for signs of over heating and melting. The outer pins are for the glow plugs, and they will overheat the connections and melt the plug to the valve cover. Then in turn melt into the injector circuit and wil cause a random missfire on that injector, which in turn can cause the IDM to shut down that bank to protect itself. Just a heads up, most code readers will not work with these Powerstrokes. A lot of folks are using Forscan to read codes.

Okay I gotcha, I actually recently redid the wiring harness for my injectors and glow plugs, it was melted and I don’t know how my truck was still running, so I don’t think it would be that, but I’m unsure,

Did you check the under valve cover wiring also? They can burn up also, along with the valve cover gasket. When you did the outer wiring repair, did you use butt connectors, or did you solder the wires? Soldering is the only way to do this repair in my opinion. I used butt connectors on a hurry up repair one time, and it was alright for a while. But I developed a miss which progressively got worse. Removed the butt connectors and replaced them with solder, and all was good again.

Yeah I did use butt connectors, it wasn’t long ago but I’ll check that out and see if that could be the issue. It’s throwing a code though so I’m not sure if that’s something that would throw a code or not.
