So, as I backed the EX with the boat into its spot last night it really struggled and I noticed some slippage. On the times that I had to overcome the few tree roots, higher sidewalk and elevation to get it to the side of the house it really slipped. Once I unhitched I ran the EX around the neighborhood and it ran flawless in Drive although it slipped a little when I purposely put it in reverse as a test. After I parked the truck I realized I left a trail of oil while backing the boat in. Most of the grass is burned mostly this morning where oil leaked.
Tranny possibly?
Where to start?
Any opinions or suspicions appreciated. TIA!!
Btw, 2000 V10 with 230k on the clock just bought it in February.
There is a dipstick for the trans just like the engine oil. If the front seal blows out it creates a big leak. It's at the front of the transmission.
Also, don't drive the truck if it is slipping. You will cause more damage.

Awesome, thanks for your reply. I'll check fluid level tomorrow.
Btw, finally was able to get to the truck this afternoon and now there's plenty of slippage both in drive and reverse. It would barely move.
Well, the fluid level is now very low so slipping is expected. Get it refilled to the correct level.
BTW, if your Exc is 4x4, next time, put it in 4-LO for backing up in a difficult situation. Helps keep the fluid from getting so hot and then puking out the front seal (which usually reseals when everything cools back down).

What is the correct solution in going for here? The front desk needs to be replaced and that should do the trick or an I looking at a whole transmission repair? Are they married to each other where I can't get away with doing one without the other?
Sorry about the questions but certainly not knowledgeable on this subject... I'm an owner not a guy who knows these trucks to the depth some of you posses.
TIA!
Yes 4x4 btw and will heed your advice if there's a next time

Voila!!! Horrific!! Completely dry.
Will head to store to pick up fluid.... Where is the fill cap located or is it thru the dipstick with a funnel? About how much will it take since its so empty, I know over filling is also bad. Always thanks for the replies.
You need to find out exactly where it is leaking from. Don't just assume its the seal.
He was pushing a load uphill in reverse. Common failure.... It would be a huge surprise if it was anything else.

Through the dipstick tube with a really long funnel.

Hard to say. Pick up a gallon of Merc v or compatible. Start with adding a quart and remeasure - engine running on flat ground. Repeat with smaller amounts until you get it into the range. Then get it up to temp and make final adjustments with the fluid at operating temp.
To replace the $10 seal requires that the transmission be pulled. If you're lucky, the seal was still flexible enough so that it reseals and this can be a one-time event if you play your cards right (and stay lucky). If you replace it, use a Viton seal as they're better capable of withstanding the high temps.
Sounds like your ready for a tranny rebuild.at 260000 that is high miles for it the average life is 175000 miles on a factory tranny. I just replaced the trany in my 2000 explorer at 249000 my excursion only has 98000. Go on line to drivetrain products.com for around 2000 you can get a refurbished trany with a 5 year unlimited millage warenty and for 200 more you can extend it to 7 years. I just got the traney for the explorer there for 1894 and 200 to exstend and 245 shipping to las vegas from MD . And they waived the 400 dollar core as long as I sent the core back with in 3 weeks. The tranny for the excursion is about 300 dollars more then I payed for the explorer. Give them a call if you need to replace it it cost me 850 to have my tranny guy swap it out. Good luck mal11963
