1956 cowl seal

So I just wasted the day trying to get the cowl
seal to work on my ‘56, I was actually able to get it to finally fit let the weather strip adhesive to dry for a few hours in the sun then installed the cowl
itself and the weather strip will not compress at all as if it’s to hard, took it all off and without the seal it lines up perfectly, does anyone make a softer seal or any suggestions to get this one to work, it’s made by oval performance industries, trying to think about another type of weather stripping that could possibly work, thanks Pete

I've always used Dennis Carpenter rubber products. They USED to be made in the USA but who knows these days

After reading a bunch of articles online they say for a 1956 you need to remove anywhere from
1 1/2”-2” , 53-55 no modifications, I’ll give that a try and report back

, fingers crossed

I bought mine for my 56 from Mid Fifty it was a tight fit and had to close the vent for a while until it settled in. I really like to use Mid Fifty, because they provide help/ hints /tips for their parts right in their catalog, and if you still have questions, the ladies are extremely knowledgeable and willing to help.

I'm fairly confident that mid fifty sells DC rubber products.

that is quite possible, just ask and they will tell you. However I have never found another supplier that the person on the phone was as knowledgeable and willing to help as everyone at MF. They hold classes for the staff where they have hands on experience with using their parts. They will also price match.

I don't think that's still the way of their company. Since Sy retired, things have changed........

I actually just called Dennis Carpenter up, spoke to a Chris in customer service, they do not carry a specific 1956 seal, he said the one that is out of stock works for 1953 to 1956, and there were no instructions for them so it’s time to experiment

I installed 2 Mid Fifty seals on my 56 and they both had someone else's name on them. I was aggravated that the first one left the vent sitting proud (high) when closed. The 2nd was no better. I had to cut and glue them both because they were too large but Mid Fifty added the cutting instructions when they sent them.

AX,
During your hyenas Mid Fifty has suffered through COVID and as Kevin mentioned the retirement of Sy. Sy's son is now running the business and "the girls" ain't what they used to be. There's not the knowledge there that once was. At the Ozark Mountain Run I was talking to Sid of Nostalgia Sids, LLC (dropped axles & more) who use to furnish Mid Fifty with their dropped axles and he kinda validated that it's not the company it once was. He did say, to my surprise, that Mid Fifty does make some of their own parts. Since I've never made it out there I didn't know but assumed they were just a middle man. Come to think of it I'm pretty sure Kevin used to sell them a part.

Yep I sure did. I supplied the cast wing nut for the under bed spare tire carrier. They purchased a large quantity of my first batch

Ya I hear ya about Mid 50 they seem to out of a lot of parts and supply’s. Try the Early ford in Ohio. I’ve been using them for all my rubber parts and they sell different if you need one bolt or two they sell some stuff inkits but if you need one item out of that kit they will sell it to you. Also there shipping is cheaper thru the mail, they use some service for shipping so you don’t pay 20 bucks for a 8 dollar item. And I usually have it in 3 days. Haven’t ordered any thing big, kinda getting to the end of my 55 driving restoration. It’s a keeper AJ

Unfortunately I am already past the point of closing it up, I actually think the fresh air is one of the cool things on these old fords , I’ll keep looking and maybe find a different weather strip that can possibly work, thanks aga
