So i noticed fluid under my truck today, crawled around and it seems to be coming from what I think is the RABS module. It is bolted to the frame near the front driver's side.
I know I'll need to replace it, but is this a "park the truck and don't drive it" situation or can i just be sure my fluid reservoir is full and deal with it later?
I'm not even sure what this module does though it's clearly part of the break system. Of course, writing this out I'm kind of thinking the smart thing is to park it until I can fix it.
RABS Hydraulic Control Unit. This is the part that modulates the brake pressure to keep the rear wheels from locking up. I guess you figured it out. Do you really want to be driving something with a leak in the brake system?
I would replace the part to keep the system. Others will tell
you to bypass the HCU because the system isn’t as good as newer ABS.

That's the part only a heckuva lot cleaner. Yeah I guess i got some brake work ahead of me.
I dont plan to bypass. I'll just replace the part. If the failure didnt involve a fluid leak I'd be less concerned but thanks for nudging me in the right direction.
I got this RAB part but am really struggling to disconnect the brake lines from the original unit. I just sprayed some PB Blaster on them. Anyone else who has had to replace this, anything I should try? I'm worried about damaging those connections!
The unit was just under $200 but I'll get about $50 back in the core. These 2 brake lines are just stuck! This is the new unit.
Patience. Maybe a little heat? Definitely need good line wrenches. Have you tried tightening the line to help break it loose or is the nut seized to the line?

the nut is seized to the line. That's what I'm trying to loosen. Yeah I had the wrong sized wrench at first! I'll just keep at it. Will post when I make progress
PB Blaster and a little heat has worked for me. Because of the brake fluid in the lines, you need to be care not to get it too hot. Just warm it up a little to help draw the penetrating oil into the fitting.

welp...this is getting fun. I've completely rounded the nut. So I'm considering cutting the line and putting a new flare and nut on it. Rounded nut.
Thank you for the suggestions. I actually did not know about line wrenches so picked up a set. They are great!
I was able to disconnect one of the lines but I had already done too much damage to this particular nut. It won't budge and nothing will grip it.
Might work on it a bit more today but likely will need to come back to this project.

Since you have one of the two lines disconnected, unbolt the hcu from the frame then unscrew the hcu from the line. Reverse the procedure to reinstall.

great idea! This was more challenging than I expected but these projects always teach me something.
thanks! New one in place!
Too late, I know, but vise grips, if you seat them well onto the nut, will do a great job when it rounds over like that.
And yes, you can use them to reconnect, and it'll all work just fine. The only trick is to not crimp them too tightly at first, and wiggle.
They will cut slots into the nut, and then you tighten them a bit more, wiggle a bit more, and so on. Pretty soon they've cut deep grooves
without crushing the nut, and with all the wiggling, you've broken the fitting free.
