Is the 4.2 basically the same as the 3.8 used in Ford automobiles? Does anyone know if they would easily interchange? I have a 3.8 rear-wheel drive car that could use some help.
The 4.2 is a bored and stroked 3.8 if I remember correctly....We used to have someone wo could tell ya all about it, but he is gone.....it is similiar to the 3.8 in mustangs and T-birds I know
The '97+ 4.2L is basically the same as the '01+ 3.8L in Mustangs. The stroke is longer in the 4.2 which gives you that extra 0.4L of displacement. The upper and lower intakes are different (although they can be interchanged).
The 99-00 3.8L's are also very similar. I think the only difference is that 99-00 3.8's are externally balanced while the 4.2's are neutrally balance. Also the 99-00's don't have IMRC's (The 4.2L's have them, correct?)
The 3.8's in earlier Mustang's (94-98) and Thunderbird's (89-97) have a completely different single-port intake. You can change back to a single port intake (not that you'd want to, unless you wanted to use the supercharger off of a T-Bird SC)
But, yeah they're basically the same motors. A few of us Mustang guys have "borrowed" your crankshaft to get some more cubes out of our engines
As for how 'easy' it is...that depends on your skill level. If you swap engines all the time, then the similarities in the engines will make this easy, however, if you have to get a shop to change the oil in your car, then it's gonna be considerably more difficult

Gone with my brain I guess. I think I'm over my 'hyper-active moment' now. I wanna see a 4.2 in a Mustang! I feel wierd that I've never seen that. BUT, I've only been on the Ford scene for oooh, 7 months now? I'm still just a newb.

Since the 3.8 and 4.2 are basically the same, and since we have to use our stock intake (since yours won't fit under the Mustang hood), it looks exactly the same as stock.
But, to humor you, here is a pic of a Mustang with an F150 upper intake.
No mistake, that is the same ugly green engine from the magazine article
The owner's name is Gaston (although in that article they called him Victor). And he changes engine setups more often than people change their underwear. Remember what I said earlier about your intake not fitting under the hood? If you look at the top of the picture you will see the holes cut in the hood so he could get it to close.
