Sterling 10.5 question

I disassembled the rear end on my 02 and pulled the carrier out and the 2 side carrier bearings are in rough shape. Trying to decide whether to put new bearings in or install a used axle.. one of the races spun and when cap is torqued the race is snug but will still slide out. Can I use a retaining compound for that like loctite 648 and be ok? Also I can't seem to rotate the spider gears with the diff out on the bench. Is that normal or do I have bigger problems? Ring and pinion look fine and pinion bearings looked good too.

Personally, I would want to replace any parts that have had a bearing race spin inside of.

Assuming it’s an open diff, the spider gears not spinning freely is a bad sign.

You can use a center punch and ping the area the race rides. It’ll raise some material to hold it. Than can use retaining compound with it. If its a LS carrier you can’t spin the spiders by hand.

Quite positive it is a limited slip. Even with a pry bar it doesn't want to budge. Nothing seemed off with it while driving other than excessive slop when getting on it and letting off. I lust dont want to waste time and money with bearings if something is up with the carrier.

This right here. We call that "strawberry" in these parts.

Peening with a punch will work if you use loctite green.

You can also sand a couple thou off the bottom of the cap using sandpaper glued to a piece of glass or precision iron or granite plate.

Definitely a LS unit.

Hows the pinion and the wheel bearings? The races from the carrier look pretty hashed.

The wheel bearing races had light pitting so I already did one side and have the other side parts ready to go. Pinion bearings and races look pretty good but thought I'd probably replace since it's apart already. So the ls diff spider gears are supposed to be really stiff?

Yeah I'm thinking those races have been rough for a long time.. truck has around 160k on it and when I bought it at 72k back in 2005 it always had a slight grind or whir that I couldn't ever put my finger on. Maybe original owner had a wheel seal go out and ran dry for a while. Never really seemed to get worse with the miles I've put on.

It's a 10.5" Sterling. Normal for the side bearings to eat themselves by 90-100K; they don't need "help" (i.e. running out of fluid).

I’d beg to differ here. I’ve personally had them with 200,000-300,000 miles on them with no issues. Just gear oil changes.
