I do not agree that an engine can get "addicted to ether". Typically ether gets used in engines that are a bit long in the tooth and on the downhill slide. The problem is people use too much ether. The ether is used as an accelerant to the normal combustion and it is truly a case when "a little dab I'll do ya". I often will use ether under extreme cold to assist engine starting with out any problems. My engines start w/o ether assist on days when it is not too cold and all summer long w/o trouble. If you can't get her running w/o ether the engine is either worn out or has poor fuel amotization. Used properly ether is a safe and reliable tool. Newer engines because of the valve retarding that is taking place during start-up can not take either, ever, under any circumstances.

Addiction is a process that can only be achived by the living.
Unless you inply that the ether asists in the destruction of the remaining glow plugs, there by destroying the engines ability to start normaly.
Replace the glowplugs and cure the addiction?
HA HA HA, that's funny.

I once was operating a two stroke Detroit Diesel powered Vibrosizer in the Nevada desert an hour and a half out of Elko (30 minutes on highway, an hour on dirt roads we made driving out there) and got there an hour before sun up on day two of the month long search for "Geo pockets" (those lumps in the earths crust that imply either water, natural gas or oil).
On day one we staged the equipment and the weather was clear, the ground was dry and above freezing.
The truck had no interior lights.
Every truck was having great difficulty starting as we were from Southern, CA and the trucks rarely ever seen freezing temps much less a driving, below zero temp blizzard that whipped up over night.
Over the next 10 minutes I proceeded to use up the whole load (a vehicle mounted container system good for at least a year or more) of Ether in an attempt to start the damn thing before the lead guy showed up with a flash light to show the FUEL KILL LEVER WAS STILL PULLED OUT!

I also learned how to operate a D8 Caterpillar as the slippery frozen crust when broken left a more slippery mud, and it had no cab or heater so we took turns with the operator freezing our asses off!

GP's

I have tried all kinds of glow plugs and I finally settled for Bosch, they are not 6 volts but 12,I have a manual switch on them since my controller fried once while driving, burnt all 8 plugs, all were swollen and I had a hard time getting them out, they were AC's.

Here is the reference for the Bosch plugs

the best thing would be to put a preheater in there gp are not a very good way to start these things a preheat like whats in the dodge for those who don't know its a heater element like what was questioned here at the begining anyways this preheater is faster and does a much better job at getting it started when its cold also the either w/o the gp will work good too if it where me i would figure out a way to mount the heater in the intake manifold
