This is my pull vehicle so you can see the low mileage and she is a garage queen. I have not done a CPS in.....well I cant remember the last time I did one. About 90 or so days ago, I went to go get fuel before hooking the RV up. In the gas station parking lot it would not start. Did the CPS and I was going in no time, easy fix. Bought a new one from FORD, my buddy is a mech there so employee pricing is pretty cool. Well this Friday I was headed out to the lake and she died on the road. Pulled out the spare, had to wait a good 30 mins for it cool down but we go it going again. Today on the way home from the lake it died......with no parts and no one close by I put the old one back in. I did check the pins and connector, it all seemed fine. Got going on the "old' one I pulled out on Friday........about 120 miles later it dies again. This time I left it in, but I had spayed a bottle of water down on it (or at least tried) and she started back up after 10 mins or so......
The only real thing I can say is when it failed: I had a loss of power, RPMs were still holding but no "go" for about 20 seconds or so then the tech dies and the dah lights come on. Previously when I loss one, it dies immediately and the tech goes down immediately as well. This made it seem like it took a minute for truck to realize she had an issue.......weird.
So I thinking it needs a new wiring harness, I found some old threads and it seems logical at this point. Any advise on this is appreciated, I am home and she is back in the garage with the hood up.
Do I need to pull the AC COMP so I can pull the old one back? Reroute it? Make it a bit longer so I can zip tie it out of the way? How far back did you folks go to splice in the new one? They are all the same color.......so one of one swap?
last time that happened to my buddy, it ended up being his IPR. I swapped out his CPS and it fired right up....then died again a half mile down the road. I towed him home and that's when we started testing.
Have you checked for soft codes yet?
I agree (x3) on the IPR thoughts. Once it cools down a bit it may work correctly again. Folks typically recommend pouring some cold water over it or spraying with some “air duster” to cool it down when it’s acting up as a verification of it being the issue.
