I recenently took my car in to get smogged and left with my head down in frustration.
During testing process the car was being reved up to test the high rpm's. I could smell some fowl smoke like burning rubber. I looked up and the shop guy had moved the car forward. I assumed that he left the emergency break on and forgot to remove it. a few min later he told me that I had major problems. the car wouldnt go in reverse or nuetral. It kept driving forward.
I got in the drivers seat and noticed when going from park to reverse the gear change was very hard. like being parked on a hill and putting it in reverse.
I noticed that the cap on the Power sterring fluid was off and that was spilt all over the engine and that must have been the smell.
Also When engine is off Neutral works fine. That is how I got it out of the shop.pushed it.When engine is on everything goes to drive.
I drove the car home and tested the gear shifting. every thing seemed to work fine. There is a gear shifter put in from the last tranny rebuild(speed shifter I think is what it is called)
When home I checked the tranny fluid and it was smelling a bit burnt and a bit brown.
I plan on replacing the filter and fluid and topping off the pwr sterring fluid.
I have my theory that it might be a solinoid or hopefully low fluid.
IF the fluid in the tranny is black and burnt after a few years your tranny is bad and will be going soon, and the person who rebuild it did not do it right or do a good job, something could also of happend at the smog testing place, if you said the power steering cap was off....they dont just fall off, and if there was no problem going in they could of done something to the tranny.....going fast and jamming it in park on the dyno....of it could of just went on its own due to poor rebuilding....did you get a warenty on the rebuild??
The tranny was rebuilt in 2001 of Nov. Warrenty was for 1 year so it has been 2 years since it was rebuilt.
I am not thinking it is the tranny. Only found two little pieces of metal in the pan the size of a pencil tip. I have seen what it looks like when the tranny goes..and there wasnt really any thing to worrie about.
I am still looking at manufacture manuals. thanks
at www.bulkpart.com for $16. I looked in my manual and they don't list your symptom. However, The forward clutch is engaged and stays engaged in any gear other than P N or R. A jammed forward clutch would give these symptoms. There is a snap ring in this clutch that can do a lot of damage. I would expect metal to show up at some point. With a manual, there are tests for the clutches that can be done with compressed air with the valve body dropped.
Thank you Opera that sounds like the right path...I looked up a refference book at the library and they didnt list the symptom either..Now I just need to find the forward clutch.
