94 5.8 sluggish (timing?)

I did get the 96 5.8 installed into my 94 in place of the 5.0. It runs out great but seems sluggish about half throttle. For an old school suggestion, it seems like running on 2 barrels and then the 4 barrels opening up. I am using the 5.0 throttle body on the 5.8, (long story, but it appears identical). The 94 5.0 had a knock sensor at the back of the block, the 5.8 had no provision for it, so that harness plug is just hanging there. Could the computer be sensing a "knock" and pulling timing out of the distributor? If so, can I plug the sensor in and just leave it hanging back behind, or maybe jumper the harness? Any help appreciated as usual.
