Thinking Exhaust back pressure sensor. Could be something clogged.

When it surges does it do it in cruise on level roadways?

And............if in cruise does it slow beyond what the truck was set at and try to recover?

What's your boost gauge's reaction when this happens?

Denny

Yes. it happens in cruise on level roadways.

it's not to the point it will slow down below it tires to recover. it always feel like the pedal is being tapped on by a nervous 15 year old on their first date

boost gauges are pretty stedy

K, I've dove into this as far as I can.

I believe you have a sensor down. EBP would be my go to, and check wiring. Number two. not a longshot, FRPS. Also inspect wiring.

To be quite honest. If I'm going to throw money at my truck, it would be toward renewed OEM sensors.

Denny (BTW, the ghost tuner could very well be the culprit. I would just find a way to get rid of it. Your fighting a losing battle with something you can't observe or command. In essence, your playing "screw your neighbor" with whoever you bought the truck from.

@DieselDenny

Thank you sir. I'll check them out and let everyone know where I'm out.

Silly question, if I set everything back to factory from a tune point of view, and I'm assuming I have a tune, what's the process to tell the ECU that there is no egr or DPF?

This is why I assume there is a tune since those items are deleted.

Thank again. Very much appreciated.

Your kind of locked up in a strange position. You can set everything back to bone stock tuning, but since your deleted, your going to have issues with regen.

My direction would be: Get your hands on a DPFR Tuner. Probably going to have to get it from Canada as they are still allowed. Check the web site.

After you have that in hand, have your truck refreshed and install that DPFR tune.

That will take care of the DPF missing and disable the EGR without dicking with other aspects of performance.

It's very hard to diagnose and claw away at something done in a previous scale as far as what did the Previous Owner do to it. (PO is the term used on this forum)

I'm always glad to help, whether I am or not, but you need a ground zero to work from.

I just reread the entire thread, something struck me. You don't really know if you have a tune and your deleted!

I'm thinking the PO deleted the tune and took the tuner and your cash and ran.

I would go forward with the previous advise but skip scrubbing/reflash. Get the DPFR and see what you see. They are plug and play.

Ok. Quick update.

1. Ford does not want us working on our trucks.
2. the egr tube is not in the same location on 4wd, driver side wheel, as it is on my 2wd, BEHIND the TURBO!!!
3. My forarms are too big to get to the EGR tube without scrapping the crap out of them.

4. Truck is running a LOT smoother and MPG is going back up
5. Still having surging sometimes to 2,000 RPM when you shut her down
6. Connected ForScan and the only odd thing I saw was sometimes there was a HUGE difference between the FRP OBDII, kPA and the FRP_DSD, KPA. Like 120,000 OBDII vs 60,000 DSD

Not sure if this is normal or if I have locked down the problem.

Thanks in advance.

6.5. Did the surge thing again. this time I paid more attention. Jumped up to 2K RPM and the went down to idle and started idling rough for about 5 seconds, then stabilized. Not sure if this helps but had to share

And both fuel filters were changed when? And do you drain your strainer, (rear filter) monthly?

This could point to fuel starvation.

Just reread and reread, I would go directly at my FPRS. If this things jerking you off like that, I can't believe it's a mechanical issue. If it runs good between issues, That's my OEM (can't stress it) go too,

Denny (you tube it!, you can do it)

FPRS is a known culprit on the 6.4L

Agree with Denny... I keep reading old threads and old YT vids, they tear so much **** apart only to find out ****ty OEM sensors cannot take the heat and malfunction... EBP & FPRS cannot be but $125 together? $$ well spent chasing PO ghosts...

Ok. is there a way to test the sensor or just replace and hope it goes away?

I have no idea when the last time the filter was replaced, I'll add that to the list.

I would like to add that relying on codes from forscan is only a vintage direction and not what's updated and current on Ford tech's scanners. It may be worth your while to run it into the dealer and have them run it.

When they tell you what they think is wrong, it's money well spent for an opinion that matters. The other direction is dropping a hundred here and then again there, and oh **** that wasn't it.

Take the recommended repair and start there.

Denny
