I need to replace the wood bed in my 53 f100. Is red oak or wite oak better then the other? Where are good places to get it? I know of Mid-Fifty and LMC. I would go LMC since it is close enough for me to pick it up, but like a lot of things they don't have it in stock.
I have two wooden sail boats from the 1930's with oak frames and cedar planking and can tell you red oak is almost never used in the wooden boat world. White oak is much preferred because it is significantly more resistant to rot. The flooring in my house is white oak and more than 130 years old. I've found it to be very hard and durable. Good luck!
If your truck is not going to live outside it doesn’t matter.
if it is, red oak is not suitable for exterior use, it absorbs water much more readily than white. Yes, you can finish it to reduce that, but white is much more durable.

Ya wood beds! Mine is Oak Mark K nothing fancy steel wear irons, she is a work truck. Use boiled linseed oil soaks in the grain and drys in a few days. Be sure to drill drain holes in front just in case it get wet and needs to drain. Also will prevent water pooling it can cause rust on your bed AJ.
White Oak or Ash . White oak is way more denser than red oak that is why it is used in whisky barrels . Cut a pc. of red oak as thin as possible . Try to suck air thru it , easily done . Try it w/ white oak , not going to happen . .
Or go to Lowe's or elsewhere and get 1×6 treated boards. They are close to the right size and are yellow pine which is what the original boards from Ford were. You'll have to let them dry them paint them.

You're right. Today's modern yellow pine is fast growth with wider ring spacing. Ford Liked to own everything in the supply chain. So he owned the forests in northern Michigan where he got his wood.
