The other day I had what I assume was a major failure of my transmission, so I'm looking for a replacement. I was towing my toy hauler, which is about 12,000 lbs. Pulling away from a stop light, I got to about 10 mph and there was a loud bang and loss of all gears. No forward gears or reverse, you can feel it trying to move, but it doesn't.
My first thought was to just get a used transmission from a salvage yard. Obviously this would be the cheapest option, but they all seem to have 200K + miles on them. Mine has 220K.
So, I'm probably looking at a reman transmission. I've never been much of a transmission person, so I don't really know what the best option is here. Do I just get a stock reman from a local rebuilder, or would I be better off spending a little more on an upgraded one?
I tow around 10-14K fairly regularly, and do a little bit of snow plowing in the winter. The truck had a freshly rebuilt 6.0 with head studs and EGR delete when I bought it, but other than that it's all stock. I've put about 60K on it.
Just looking for some opinions on what my best option would be here. Thanks!
