Hi, my next project for my 88’ F250 is to repair or replace the steering gear box. The source of the leak is at the top where the steering bar connects to the steering box. Is it hard to replace that seal? Looking for a reliable fix. Years ago I had done an adjustment to take the play out of the steering and that’s all that’s been done since owning the truck. Or would it be a better idea to just replace the gear box with a new one and be done with it. Been reading about a unit called the red top? As always thank you for taking your time to read and your advice
Knottyrope, are the red head units new or rebuilt?
Red head units are high quality rebuilds. Check out their website for details. They rebore the cases to install bearings, instead of bushings, or nothing in some cases. I've heard good things about them for years.
It is certainly possible to just replace the seal yourself if you have some basic tools and knowledge.
I know it's just a patch, but if it's not a serious leak, I've had good luck with Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak. Unless the seal lip is damaged it'll usually stop the leak with only one bottle.
mechmagcn, my leak is constant when the truck is running do you think the leak stop could eliminate that type of leak? Good company, have used their fuel additives before. Prefer the cheapest fairly reliable way out. But don’t want to spend the money on extra things if I need to just buy a new gear

Seconding the lucas oil power steering stop leak. Took me two or three bottles... And the leak/whine disappeared and has not come back. The whine used to be so bad people on the sidewalk would look up from their phones when I turned, lmfao
Ok, guess I’ll take your guys advice and try the Lucas product maybe I’ll get lucky. If it doesn’t work then I’ll get the red head replacement ordered next.
If you use lucas, buy a new pump when. Doing the box. The seals will shrink and leak once you flush it out.
So, it sounds like I’ll come out cheaper to try and replace the seal or replace the whole steering box instead of putting stop leak in it, should the stop leak not work I’d have to buy the power steering pump also? Is that what your saying. Again looking for a reliable fix and to make it as cheaply as possible,,,
