So my 6.9 IDI i used to have (sold in April 2022) was a 1987 Ford F250 XLT 6.9 IDI Diesel with the 3spd C6, 4x4. Sold it cause the previous owner put in a freezeplug and it shot out and the engine overheated causing major failure. The previous owner actually bought it back from me... lol. That being said a customer came to me with an offer to buy his 6.9 IDI. It is a 1987 6.9 IDI F250 XLT C6 and 4x4 like mine was but its got a factory Banks Turbo Charger. My question is does the Banks Turbo add any power at all to the 6.9 ? My 6.9 didnt seem all too slow but my 7.3 PS is a night and day difference. Like I have said in previous posts my 2000 7.3 needs rust repair badly and I am looking for a truck to replace its daily tasks. Does the 6.9 IDI Banks Turbo really do anything besides eat more fuel and make more noise ? I was already talking to a guy with a 1993 IDI-T 7.3 but I like 6.9s so I put that deal on hold to look into this 6.9 Turbo (Didnt know they did 6.9 Turbo from factory).
The 6.9 turbo was not a factory option. I have a 7.3 with an older ats88 turbo system on it and it's marginal. Indirect injection and lack of an intercooler holds it from making any reasonable power. I'm not very impressed with it. The newer powerstroke are a much better option if you want a decent daily driver. Maybe an obs 7.3ps is in your future.

Ah good to know that the Turbo wasnt factory. Like I said I liked my 6.9 but OBS 7.3 fetch high prices in my area north of $8,000 typically with 1st and 2nd Gen 5.9 12v and 24v fetching $12,000 typically. I wanted to get another IDI because they are cheap and once my 7.3PS is repaired the truck wont really be used.
the banks turbo wakes the engine up. it is not a powerstroke, but will be better than stock. figure about a 25 HP boost in power. what really wakes the engine up will be turning the injection pump about 2-3 flats. i go up until i see a haze of black smoke under full throttle take off, than backing off one flat.
a low restriction muffler adds power too because there is less backpressure in the exhaust.
