All right I'm new to diesels and know nothing! On top of that I've always been a GM man so I know less about Fords, But I think the F250 Super Duty is the best looking truck out there and from what I can tell the Power Stroke is the Engine. Here's the question! I've found a 99 F250 4x4 Super Cab SWB with the PSD mated to a 6 speed and it has 150,000 miles on it for $14,900 in what I would call very good shape! Is this too much for a truck with this many miles on it and how many miles can I expect too put on this truck before it needs major maintenance.
well first off welcome aboard.... we're always glad to see a convert
you are right about the powerstroke being THE engine. the 6 speed should help ease your mind...don't have to worry about the tranny like you would in an auto....150K isn't alot of miles for the PSD, especially if you can get ahold of maint. records to see if it has been cared for. if the coolant/oil/filters/etc have been changed as recommended..then its probably got another 150k or more in it. look it over good, check for any oil leaks, try to get some service records, check out the turbo fins (look for blowby), check the air intake tube...and if all looks good, take if for a test drive. If you like it...I'd say go for it. I dont' think the price is out of line at all. Good luck with it. Keep us informed on your decision.
Well I talked to the dealer that has the truck and he told me he doesn't have any maint records on the truck, but it is very clean and doesn't leak any oil! I called the local Ford garage and talked to the service manager and I got mixed signals from him! He told me he's seen the PSD get 400,000 miles with no problem but has also seen them with less then 100,000 that were junk, like he said it's how they are cared for and maintained! He told me that repairs on the PSD is way higher then a gas engine and told me the starter runs about $450 and each injector is about $350 plus labor to install them. I'm not a rich man so I wonder if a gas engine wouldn't be the way to go, but I sure would rather have a PSD. I just think I'll say too Hell with caution and get it and hope for the best. One more question, do the injectors go bad very often and why do they go bad!
