When it rains it pours. Last Sunday had to take my car to mechanic and wife followed me. Dropped mine off and got into her car and she said her brakes started grinding when she pulled in. Went home and started her brakes and had to go to parts store. Truck is all I got left to drive. Engauge the starter and all it does is spin. Tried three times. Remembered my 70's and 80's trucks when I'd get out the old hammer and wacked it a few times. That did the trick. Drove it a few times throughout the week and no problems until yesterday. Same thing happened. 176k on it. Don't know if it's the original starter or would it even last that long. Am I looking at a new starter or can I lube this one up to last longer?
If it's the original 21 year old starter it's time for a new one anyway. Mine lasted about 19 years.
Two options I like in this exact order:
-yank it out and take it to a good starter/alternator shop for a rebuild, if you have one. Some turnaround time involved if you can deal with it but no installation surprises or gotchas.
-get a Denso. Only two bolts line up and they are are a little short. I reused the OEM bolts with some blue Loctite just fine but some guys get a pair of suitable replacements that are longer. The termination for the power lead is also off by 90 degrees and needs to be flattened with a pair of pliers. Other than that it's a slam dunk.
Ya thanks. I did forget to ask of options. So many machine shops. auto repair and electric motor repair shops have closed around here. 2 years ago the alternator in my Triumph needed rebuilt. Had to go 50+ miles to do it.
I should have looked a little closer because this starter is a 2 bolt not 3 like factory. Had to wack it again to start. Don't know if I would want to rebuild this one cause who knows where it came from. Anyway just checked with one of my former Auto service customers and he confirmed there are no rebuilders around.

Back to working on this, had other issues come up. Anyway might be a dumb question but should the after market cone on mine fit a 6.7 starter. Looks like the 3 front screws and the 2 long ones come out the it should come apart. Also calling around some ask me if automatic and others don't. Is that important? Asking for a Denso they have Remanufactured Densos not rebuilt. I guess the difference is all new working parts inside unlike rebuilt they replace the bad parts with new and reassemble.

The links in post #8 will likely answer all of your 6.7L starter questions.
As for the Denso, there are A LOT, A LOT, A LOT of China knockoffs, buyer beware. CNC Fabrication and Diesel is one of the few trusted sites that sells a genuine Denso.
@Wes444 has one more option for you. I forgot the brand of starter he has, hopefully he will be along shortly to help out.
