Hi All- the lower spring ( purple in photo 1 ) was broken off when I opened everything up. So I had nothing to go off of, other than the service manual and whatever I can find online. I have 2 questions :
1) The lower purple spring seems wonky. I had a hell of a time getting it connected and Im not sure if its installed correctly ?
2) The metal arms that come out of the brake cylinder are a bit crooked too and not straight across ( they are at a bit of an angle ) . I cleaned up the old ones and just pressed them into the new cylinder but it didnt appear as if they were to snap in / seat into a specific place. They just pushed into the rubber.
Do these issues resolved themself once driving or do they matter ? Just not sure how exact things need to be before putting on the drums and buttoning everything up again.
I got to thinking, there are various types of brake adjustment mechanisms. They all react to excess brake shoe movement, when applied in reverse. Curious, have you looked at the other side brake yet? This spring you are working with, it's not the broken one is it?
Hey Tompkins
I believe what Tbear was trying to say is on the U tube link below. Never posted a link before so hope it works for you.
Go to 15:50 and stop it to see how the spring hook looks.
Correct. Due to the broken spring, I installed all new hardware, shoes, re-surfaced drums, springs etc. I have tried to turn that new non broken purple spring 180 degrees every which way, and the only way is the way I showed photos of it, being wonky.
I have not looked at the other side as its up against a wall with no room to work, so once I fixed this current side, my plan was to turn the truck around and get to work on it.
tbear853 - See new photos. This is turning it 180 degrees per your method above. It still looks weird but maybe thats just the way it is supposed to be. No longer on the top of the shoe but rather on the side.

I appreciate your help. There are only so many ways one can turn a hook attached to a spring and that video is exactly how I was doing it. The end result was my latest photos, which I hope will work.
Hey tompkins
Sorry but I totally must be missing something here.
You say you have it just like the video BUT your picture as of 2:45 pm yesterday shows the hook NOT like tbear and the video shows.
Watch the video one more time and stop it at 15:49 and use the stare and compare method.
If I missed your latest picture or have it wrong please post it again...
Thank you,

Reason: correct vidio to video
I have watched that video a dozen times and compared probably two dozen times. The reality is that the hook and spring can only be turned a certain way. The hook needs something to attach to and if I flipped it over there is no way for it to hold or even stay remotely in place. Im guessing the spring in the video is a different spring then what I have, considering the year of both vehicles. If you think I am completely wrong, which I may be, feel free to draw a little sketch on a piece of paper and attach it. Are you saying the way I have it in the latest photo will not work ?
The "hook" is not used as a "hook", it is just how the wire is bent so the tip rests inside of the hole on the far side to keep the spring leg in the hole.
Look at how those two orange springs are hooked to the brake shoes.
Not saying that you're wrong, just never seen one "hook"ed like that.
I agree with you guys but this hook is not like the video. It doesnt allow for it to rest on the inside of the hole on the far end, due to its size. The only possible way is the way I have it. I guess Ill just cross my fingers and hope it works as it should !
Please do post a picture of what you find on the far side, you might be right. I know there are different varieties out there, I just hadn't seen it other ways on my stuff.
