Memorial Day weekend, I replaced my timing chains, tensioners, guides, and oil pump on a 4.6 2V with Melling components. I did this because I was starting to hear the cold start rattle. I also replaced the oil and filter with full synthetic 5w-30 and a Motorcraft filter.
Unfortunately, I still have what I believe is the cold start rattle. The old guides didn't have any chunks missing, so I don't think I have huge pieces blocking the oil pickup, but I haven't pulled the pan. I didn't carefully clean the tensioner mounting points because none of the videos I watched specifically mentioned it, and the surface didn't seem to have any residue, since the tensioners are cast iron without a gasket.
Any thoughts on why I still have the rattle? Tests I should do?
My '07 2V 4.6 has the cold start rattle, too. I started running some Amazon Basics 0W-40 Euro because I have it and this truck is a beater. I swear the rattle is greatly reduced, which is not something I was expecting or aiming for -- I was just trying to use my oil stash.
I would advise a direct pressure gauge to test the actual oil pressure
You are using a Motorcraft oil filter right?
Replace the oil pump, use a Melling HV

Do you get the noise with no belt installed?
Hmm, I'm not quite ready to switch oil grades like that, but I'll keep it in mind.
I haven't checked for rattle without the belt - what would that tell me.

I'll watch some videos on how to check oil pressure. I am using a Motorcraft filter. When I did the timing job, I replaced the pump with a Melling standard volume. The HV only gives 8% more volume - would that really make a difference?
No belt would just rule out accessories. You shouldn't have rattling if all your timing set is new, unless you're getting roller follower noise.
You did pull the grenade pins, yes?
I don't think a HV pump would affect cold start rattle, no. A HV pump helps once the oil is hot and thinned, and it's most beneficial on 3V's, esp those with cam phasers.
No, not much difference between the HV and the regular oil pump
People with high miler engines just have better luck with the HV
You just pull the oil pressure sending unit out and install a direct pressure gauge in the port
Run it and check the oil pressure then replace the sender
Ok, I picked up an oil pressure tester from Harbor Freight and did a cold start with it attached. I heard the rattle. My initial pressure was 85 psi, and it went down to about 40 psi with the engine idling at 188 *F.

Do those numbers look normal?
Seems good to me. I don't think oil pressure is your issue
Is some degree of cold start rattle? Also, is it possible that I have a dirty surface between the tensioner and the block that causes some overnight leak?
I don't think I mentioned this in the first post, but I do have some sort of tick in my engine. I'm not sure if it's a lifter, a rod, or a cat, but it comes from the passenger side and comes and goes at all temps. I didn't think it is related, but that is additional info.
What's a bit weird is that it doesn't do the rattle on every start, just some of them.
hello, just wanted to ask if you ever got to the bottom of your cold start rattle? I have the same noise on my 4.6 2v in my 2014 E150.
thank you for any info!
