Excursion Electrical quirks

Hello all,

I’ve had my excursion for about 10 years now and ever since the day I got it, it’s had weird electrical quirks, that I cannot figure out. The first one being the dome lights stay on for about five minutes every time I turn off the ignition. The door ajar light does not come on either, however, I have never seen it come on even when I do open the doors, so I’m not sure if a switch is stuck or the light is broken. I have also done every trick in the book with unplugging the rear hatch door sensors, lubing up the switches in the doors and so, no results. The next thing is that my automatic headlights do not work. Anytime I switch it to automatic it just turns them off. Also whenever I drive my theft
light blinks and I’m not sure how to fix that either. I know usually this is because of a tune, however, this also happened when the truck was completely stock. And the last one is my truck will not go into programming mode to attach a key fob anytime I do the ignition switch is on and off eight times nothing happens. I have heard this is because my dome lights are on and the truck thinks they doors open however, I cannot figure that one out either. I really just want to be able to have a working key fob because manually opening the doors every time gets annoying. Thank you guys so much. Any help is appreciated.

I believe your problem is caused by bad or degraded relays. Over time relay contracts become burnt and or pitted. This causes inconsistent contact connections. I have owned my ‘04 Limited X 6.0 diesel with 175k on the clock for 18 years. Most of my electrical problems have been due to degraded relays. When I have an electrical problem, the first thing I do is look for a relay in the circuit.

Here is where I would start. Swap the 306 relay with another similar relay. If that does not work, there are two time delay relays on the back of the instrument cluster circuit board. I would replace them. They are available on Amazon. These are soldered in relays, not plug-in-play. This solved my similar problem to yours.

Finally, 30amp relays are readily available and are inexpensive. I buy them by the box from the OnlineLED store. Every 6 months I rotate all of the 30amp relays in the power center under the steering column. If another problem shows up, then I replace the bad relay. I replace all the relays annually.
