Do not screw with the adjustment first thing, you'll likely screw it up. This is especially the case if the thing used to register correctly.
The real first thing to do is to check to see if your shifter is "sloppy". If so, usual cause is loose Torx screws under the dash or worn out shifter bushings. Less common are stretched cables or other loose portions in the linkage.
