Windshield repair kits

Don't know about anyone else but with the miles I drive stone chips will happen sooner or later and I like to carry a repair kit or two in the truck to stop them from becoming runners.
I've used these many times with great success and have put off replacing a window by years. The '21' truck has 6 repairs so far.
Easy to do taking 45 minutes tops and convenient in a hotel parking lot, camp or at home. I do get asked about them when repairing it the hotels when they see the plunger attached to the windshield. I'll bet over the years I used these kits close to 50 times.

Amazon seller had a 6 pack for $48.64 dropping the price to $8.11 each. A month ago when I bought one at the auto store it was $17 which is the going price over the counter give or take it seems now.

Let the stones fly.

Not for everyone but I like them for the convenience.

I have a guy that comes to my house and does a better job that I likely could. But for on the road, I should pick up one of those kits.

My insurance is $100 deductable, and replaces the windshield.....no reason to ever fool around with a kit like that.

I'd probably make a mess with it. $0 deductible and Safelite will go to the house, work, etc.

It might be if you're racking up 50k miles a year and don't have a stick and brick home for a window repair service to come to or sit and wait at the shop.

Me personally using your method would probably have me at atleast 4 windshields in 2 years so far or looking through long cracks in the windshield. No thanks

You either have extremely bad luck or are following semis and any vehicle way too close to have 6 repairs on a 21.....

I wish that was the case but not always. Probably too much seat time in aday on the way to work.

These windshields angles aren't as forgiving as my 2012 was.

I've had rocks hit my windshield that were kicked up by vehicles going the opposite direction. So it isn't always a case of following too close.

O for sure that happens too but 6 in 2-3 years is quite a lot, even if driving 50k miles a year.... Anyway hopefully the OP's luck is better with other things than his windshield luck .

That's actually a great idea!!

What people don't understand is ANY time an insurance company has to spend money, it is charged to the insured experience rating.
My brother in law is an agent for one of the 'farm' companies.
What that means is it keeps you from getting the deepest discounts available.
Years ago, I dropped glass coverage, and justbpay cash for the windshields or repairs. That was one of the best decisions I've made.
My full coverage with no accidents is under $500 a year .

I have one in my shop that I keep meaning to grab. During our trip to Texas some A-Hole in a super duty was too impatient to follow along doing 74 in the 70 zone while I was behind a semi passing another semi. 45 freaking seconds, that all he would have waited, but NOOO he had to be a A hat and fly around, cut me off, just barely missing the truck we were passing and my front end, ran off the road and kicked rocks up dinging my windshield. Guess what, he was STILL stuck behind the semi that was in front of me! A complete total idiot. Had I floored it he would probably have crashed into the semi.

I have used these kits in the past and they do work really good. Sometimes the bullseye will have a slight crack that doesn't get filled, but it wont spread, it just leaves a slight imperfection.

A case of 6 for that price is not a bad deal, provided there isn't a short shelf life.

I have heard that they can dry up even if unopened. I bought a Rain X windshield repair kit a few months ago to try on my wife's windshield, still haven't used it so it might be a waste of the $11 I paid.

One is being used right now on the Wolverine X4 windshield. The other 5 will be ready if needed and if they don't get used still sounds like a win win I personally am willing to be ready for. 😉

I have used those DIY kits for years with great results. Most glass shops use a faster system that doesn't always result in a good looking repair. These take some time, but you can run around doing other garage tasks while the kit works its magic.

I don't buy glass coverage because my windshields are typically around ~$200 (older cars and a cash job) and the coverage is $100/year additional, and even in Colorado, I don't replace windshields every 2 years.

Rock Auto carries those Permatex kits for $8.61, BTW. You pay a lot more in a retail setting, as the OP noted. I have never seen them 'dry out' or fail, even after sitting on the shelf for years.

On my last truck I took it in twice to safelite for chip repair $50 each. They did a crappy job. Bought the parmatex kit for $13 watched a couple YouTube videos and it came out perfect.
