98 ranger 4.0 starting problems

98 ranger 4.0 starting problems
high mileage but dependable till lately.only drive twice a week.always in my own driveway so far wont start.at scrader valve has fuel. no start with starting fluid.today pulled 1 wire off dist added long spark plug wire from dist to xtra spark plug grounded in front of windshield,working by myself.turned key & started on 5 cyl & heavy spark in front of me.been going on a few months.no start today,normal tomorrow. any thoughts,thanks
