Fold only one mirror

Is this possible? When squeezing into my back yard with the trailer, I need to use the right mirror but have to fold the left one in.
Was easy on my 2000 F250 with manual mirrors...

Do it manually; just push it in. To get it back out fold them both in and then back out again.

Well, unlike my old truck manual mirrors, which was designed to do what you suggested, these ones have plastic gears inside to transfer the motion.
Why won't doing this ruin them?

They are designed to manually fold if they get hit. I've never had a problem folding them one at a time, did it on my 17 and now on my 22. Others may have a different opinion though.

Hmmm, didn't know they designed that way, never seen the mechanism myself. Good to know, but now I'm curious as to the particulars of the design....

It doesn't use the gears, it skips over them, somehow. Like a "break away" safety feature.

Then, just pull the button back to retract the one still open, then use the button to extend, and they get back in sync.

I've never had one apart, but usually, something like this is just a simple clutch in one of the gear hubs that has just enough holding power to move whatever it's attached to, but any greater forces override the clutching mechanism.

I wouldn't do it when it's freezing out.... but yes, you can manually fold them.

Not that I recommend doing it a lot.

Okay, so if it can fold due to impact then maybe when I do it I should do it quickly and forcefully? Doing it slowly and weakly might damage it?
I would do this several times per year, most likely not in the winter...

I actually clipped wings with another Superduty last week on a really tight section of back road. I was rolling about 5mph because I knew it was going to be close and we may have to stop and fold mirrors, other driver didnt slow down and was doing about 15-20mph. My manual mirror just folded in from the collision and their power mirror folded in as well. They stopped and their mirror would not fold out anymore and was clearly busted inside even though the housing didnt even break, just their marker lens broke.

I've head guys at the service bay manually fold the mirror in, and it has never seemed to have an affect on them.

Don't you just love a chucklehead like that, who drives like they own the road and not a care in the world, crash into you without even considering slowing down or being at all careful in a situation like that.
Good that he broke his mirror, serves him right!

Only reason they stopped after clipping mirrors was because they couldn't get by the trailer. Most people out my way are good about larger vehicle having right of way but I knew id end up running into the one who isnt. The impact most likely was the sole cause for their mirror power function breaking but at a pretty low speed collision thats some weak components to give up especially when the mirror assembly gave in and folded.
