Thank goodness. Okay I’ve removed two of the bolts holding it to the engine and I’ll do the rest tomorrow. Any other input on the lack of power? I mean the engine has ticked since I bought it but it became really bad just recently. My theory, and maybe this is far out there, but it happened after I took it on the highway for the first time. Perhaps the higher rpms and heat/pressure had an especially greater toll on the existing crack? Sounds a bit far fetched but who knows. Thanks for all you guys’ help, this forum is great.

how do you do this?

Start with the basics:
Check your compression.
Check your fuel pressure.
Check for codes.
Check your timing.

This is probably your main lack of power. The engine needs timed correctly and run before any proper diagnosis can be completed

if your timing is fluctuating that much and you have unexplained ticking noise, the Harmonic balancer can do that when it fails and Heat will make them worse as the outer ring expands and the rubber detaches from it

at idle look at the crank pulley for any wiggle to it

Okay so a little update. I have pulled the manifolds both upper and lower intake as well as the exhaust. While I am almost positive I felt air escaping from the exhaust manifolds while they were on I see no cracks right now. Is there a good setup for testing them? It could be a hairline crack that I just can’t see because of rust and such. I put them in an electrolysis bath for a few hours to clear some grease and rust off. Unfortunately the ear of the lower intake manifold by cyl 6 broke off while I was removing the exhaust so I will need to buy another one. I’ll look into harmonic balancer as well as timing stuff but it will be some time before I get an intake manifold in. Anything I can check in the meantime that hasn’t already been said?

Lay a long straight edge across the exhaust manifold ports to check for warping. Look for pitting at the ball and socket flanges.

If you need to replace the harmonic balancer be sure to get one with the tone wheel for the misfire detector. 1996 only part. Consider sending yours out for rebuild.

Okay sorry for the delay. Update. Both manifolds have been pulled have been inspected for hi and low areas. The gasket itself seems to be okay with maybe a couple of sooty areas. I’m going to upload some pics of the manifolds and also the gasket. (My apologies I don’t have a photo of the manifold for cyl 4-6 but I will take one today).
