1977 F 150 electrical problem

Hey, I have a 1977 f150, and I’ve been having problems with it holding power, once the truck sits for a while it will turn over and start and run perfectly fine, once I turn the truck off and go to turn it over again within 10 minutes the truck won’t turn over but the heater works. I’ve replaced the battery alternator and starter this past month so I’m stuck! Anyone have any suggestions?

When it won’t turn over, can you describe what it is doing? Starter not turning over? Starter turning but no run/idle? I’ve heard similar issues related to the ICM but am guessing without more details.

The truck won’t turn over at all! Turn the key and it’s completely dead

I'm guessing it starts OK after a cool down then. It can get warm under a hood. That fender mounted start solenoid is mechanical in nature, they are cheep too. Might be worth a try, maybe just try jumping across the two biggest terminals to see if that changes things. Turn the key to run, should start if so.

I've done it with a big pair of pliars, but safer way I think is take a jumper cable and clip one clip to the post nearest the starter, then with firm hand for good control, clip the other to the post nearest the battery, or use two .... one clipped to starter side solenoid post, one clipped to the battery pos post, and then stand a few feet away from the battery and touch the other two ends firmly together.

Agreed. Does it start once cooled down? Or is it intermittent? Could be a battery, battery cable, relay, starter cable or fuseable link. Consider taking a few of these off the list by:

Verifying battery has 12V

Checking battery connections., both pos and gnd

Checking starter relay connections, battery to relay, relay to starter

Squeeze test your fusable link on the relay side of the notch. Soft? If so might be bad.

You mentioned that you recently replaced the alternator. If so, you may want to double check the connections to the voltage regulator. I had a similar problem in that the truck would start and run but after a few start/stop cycles, the battery would drop enough that the electrical accessories would work but it would not turn over. I replaced the voltage regulator but the PO had done a lot of "repairs" to the wiring so I missed one wire. It turns out that wire is responsible for routing power from the alternator to the battery for charging. I can't remember exactly which wire it was but I thought I would mention the voltage regulator in case the other suggestions do not address the problem. I ended up replacing the starter solenoid and the voltage regulator just to make sure everything was new. It was a cheap repair.
