That dose not look like a VR but a relay.
What dose it control the horn maybe?
What are the wire colors? Looks like 2 yellow and a white?
Also where is it located in the engine bay?
I think I found the VR on the front right beside the rad. thanks
It could be there, but it also could be located on the right fender inner apron adjacent to the starter solenoid, the horn relay is also located in this area.
If the regulator is the original, it will have a blue cover. If it's the newer solid state electronic regulator, the cover wasn't painted, it's silverish.
Genuine Ford solid state cover will have MOTORCRAFT embossed on the diagonal.
In 1981, Ford replaced the original points type regulator w/a solid state electronic regulator. The original alternator to regulator wiring harness wasn't changed. so it works just fine.
I replaced the original with an aftermarket one the local parts dealer said is a match, my volt meter is still reading 17.5 volts when charging. could this have something to do with only 3 wires coming from the adapter? Thanks

The blue cover regulator is the original, the other is a made in Taiwan replacement.
The wiring harness fit the original, so it should fit the replacement IF it's a Ford regulator.
There was never an adapter. The alternator wiring harness connected to the alternator, then plugged into the regulator.
I swapped my original mechanical regulator to solid state regulator for a '80's F-150s probably 35 years ago, just used an Echlin from NAPA, never an issue. Plug & play as ND said, and much steadier voltage regulation.
