I've always wanted a truck with a standard looking bed that tilts or dumps. I found one kit from Harbor Freight for about $1850. Does anyone have experience with a truck that has a regular bed that dumps? I've seen show trucks that tilt to the side. That's not what I am looking for.
Here's the info from the net about the Harbor Freight kit:Item # 330902
I know it's for a newer year but I think it could be made to work.
If you plan to actually use it the bed and the truck frame should be reinforced. It's hard to do that without raising the bed up off the frame at least a little bit. To keep the body lines matching you would then need a body lift on the cab.
I drove a shop truck in college that had one. It was a 3/4ton chevy. The dump install was very well done but the amount of reinforcement required, lifted the box. I think the "hinge" was also a problem with fitment.
I looked into it also as I use my truck to haul firewood and a dump would be nice, but too much involved to pull it off for what it's worth. I found that hooking chain to spare tire and loading it front of box before loading wood, then attach other chain end to something fixed, and drive off; wood unloaded.
Thanks everyone for your input. I think the consensus is it's not worth it for me. Maybe this thread and input will help others who are thinking about it. I would use it but it would be mostly for the cool factor.
