Have a 1986 Ford F250 With AOD 302 EFI 2 wheel drive 8ft bed base model with over 100.000 miles Begin to experience a shudder when going into 3rd gear only every other gear including overdrive no problem and no problem until the truck is driven for a while. And transmission is warmed up. Then there's When I experience the shutter. With no noises. Check the transmission fluid Brown and slight burnt smell. Checked Throttle valve cable working And right position. Did not check with a pressure gauge internal pressure. drop the transmission Pan Drain the fluid including torque converter check valve body bolts with inch pound torque Wrench to specs. Noticed some glitter in the Pan and dirt also from a dirty funnel. Run a magnet in the Pan picked up tiny shaven's Sticking to the magnet. But not much. Refill transmission shifts and runs great until it's hot and still have the 3rd gear shutter but not as bad and only when hot. Check temperature around transmission. Couldn't find it no more than around 128 f.
Put this stuff in it. It's not cheap but if anything will get rid of the torque converter clutch slipping, this will do it. I have personally seen this stuff work.
Thanks for your advice but I am also wondering about changing the torque converter because I would like to permanently solve this issue so have you ever seen a shudder problem that wasn't the torque converter and was some other transmission issue.
Well after hashing all this out with AOD decided to rip it out of there get a good quality transmission rebuild kit and torque converter. Break it down. Rebuild it back and Post my results after completion. I may break it all down 1st before I order parts kit just so I get everything that I need at once.
