I am seriously restoring my 1991 F250 4.9 C.I. 6 cyl—five sp 4x4. The temperature gauge refuses to work. I would apreciate any info on the original wiring and/or help repairing.
I have purchased and installed a restored instrument cluster that has been professionally restored to like new. Tested and guaranteed to all function as OEM. Everything in the cluster works perfectly, all the gauges except the temp, and it looks like new. The temp gauge does not move at all. I replaced the temp sensor and thermostat. No effect. I do not have a complete wiring diagram for the sensor to gauge. Or does it go into an ECM, and if so, what are the input pin id and the output to the guage id? Any help, info, or guidance to fix the temp gauge will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, JMC
Your engine has 2 temp sensors. One for the ECU and one for the gauge cluster. Did you change out the sensor that has one-wire terminal or two-wire terminals? Did you use Teflon tape to install the sensor? You should use Teflon paste aka pipe paste. Measure the resistance of the sensor between the negative battery terminal and the sensor terminal. It should be somewhere in the 70 ohm range if the engine is cold.
Edit: fixed my grammar and the expected ohm readings.
Man! What a great response from you two men. I really apreciate your extensive replies. I did change the front sensor. And used the pipe paste. No wonder I had no effect. I will replace the correct one ASAP.
Thank you both, James McP
