Yes, but water and mud can still get in through the axle seals......especially as the seals age.

J/K.......I've got a good friend that lives in WoodCreek......
One simple question: How do I go about checking my diff? I looked under my X the other day and I couldn't see how I would check much less for drain the fluid. How and better yet, what do I do? Thanks.

Look on the front side of the differential. On the left side you'll see a plug with a 3/8" square drive. Pull that plug to check the fluid level. To drain the diff you have to pull the rear cover. To refill it the hard way is to pour (or pump) the fluid into the side plug hole. The easy way is to pull the VSS off of the top of the diff and pour it in there.
I've got a plug with a square hole in it. Unscrew the plug and stick your finger in. Don't know about yours though. I also have a Dana 50 in the front and a Ford 10.5 in the rear.
If you have to drain the differential, you'll have to remove the cover.
Why not go ahead and put an aftermarket differential cover on whil you're at it?
PML makes nice covers and are affordable. They hold about .8 qt of more fluid, plus they have a bottom drain plug and an accessible top fill plug.
Never have to pull the cover again to change or check fluid, plus you run a cooler differential.
I just installed mine 2 weeks ago. Sweet.

In the exact same storm, I made it through with water up to the bottom of my headlights (at the 59 & Sheperd interchange). I just put it in low and idled--the fan clutch allowed the fan not to throw water up on the engine.
I had to pull up my plastic doorsills afterward and shopvac out the water that was in the body channels and leave them off so the edge of the carpet could dry (got wet about 1" up) but that was it.
