I'm going to use an oil filter (1995) to press the seal inside the knuckle. Does anyone have the seal driver 6695 or equivalent to take the depth measurement so i know how far to press it in? Or, how will i know that its in far enough
It will only go as far as the axle shaft will slide into the differential. Can't really go too far, well provided your not forcing anything. Just buff the inside of the knuckle, doesn't have to be shiny just smooth. Oil the seal and the knuckle, (remember everything in life is better w/ the proper amount of lubrication) and it should go in pretty easy once it's started in the bore.
Thanks udsuth for the info.
Well, it does work but it went in a little to far. Had to back the axle out about an 1/8 to a 1/4 in order to get the c clip in the grove.
A measurement would have nice but it must be a secret.
Of course it works, I'm the one who figured it out, and if over shooting the gasket seat a 1/4 was the most eventful part of the job then you better hoist your glass and give thanks to the truck gods tonight. Best not to tempt their wrath. (Just in case you're unaware, smartass is my middle name. My mom had it legally changed when I was 25.)
I doubt anyone has ever thought or bothered to actually take a measurement. I bet I've had my knuckles apart at least half a dozen times probably more and never thought to myself ”better measure that”.
