When re installing the rope seal on a 239 flathead, I know to soaking in oil and then cut it off leaving just a nub on both ends but my question is it advisable to put a dab of epoxy or silicon on the lip to help the seal?
Depending which type of rope seals you have, soaking in oil is not always necessary. Graphite-type seals from both FelPro and Best say not to soak. (They are the black ones, usually).
I don't use any RTV on the ends, epoxy definitely not. Best gives you a "popsicle stick" cutting gauge with their seals, to gauge the amount to leave proud of the surface. It's thinner than a real popsicle stick, a little thicker than cereal box cardboard.
I thought, there I go thinking again, they all had to be pre oiled I have Fel-Pro gaskets. I haven't opened the box yet as I am actually reading directions and asking questions first, L
There are some molded seals but their effectiveness and longevity is pretty suspect. There is a Buick one-piece seal that sort-of works on the front, but not great.
