I like those easy solutions. Be careful doubling up gaskets. You will likely end up with a leak. Stock valve covers are a dime a dozen. If I saved mine I would have sent them to you. I tossed them because, after multiple attempts, there were no takers.

Good that you found it and it's an easy fix.
The bosses are the flat spots or other identifier on the ends of the rocker shaft. these must be pointed down so the oiling holes are on the pressure side ( bottom ) of the rocker arm. if you didn't remove the bolts from the stands it couldn't roll over so you're fine.
