Looking for wheel recommendations

Hello everyone

I just picked up a used 2016 F350 SD Platinum, crew cab, long bed, SRW and I am trying to figure out what size wheels and tires I can put on it. I like the factory platinum wheels, but the original owner took them off and put a set of 18" wheels with 35X12.50R18 Toyo Open Country R/T tires on. The truck has at least a 2" lift so the tires do not rub, but all four tires will need to be replaced soon and are the 65psi rating not the 80 psi like the back requires. I want to replace the wheels with either a set of OEM 20X8 platinum wheels or something in 18X9 or 20X10, but I am not sure which direction to go. I would like to keep the 35X12.50 tire, but they recommend no smaller than a 8.5" wide wheel and the factory wheels are only 8" wide. I have also read that if I stick with an 18" wheel versus a 20" wheel the tire will have a bigger sidewall which will allow for a softer ride so it won't feel so much like a big truck. I don't want to have to do any cutting or modifications to the truck so what size wheels and offsets are recommended with a 35X12.50 tire.

I also wonder how 20" wheels and stock size tires are holding up in heavy use, unforseen potholes etc. I guess there's still enough sidewall to make it work.

I'm shopping for OEM alloys to replace my steelies right now, and I'm staying 18" personally.

You can absolutely run 35x12.50 on an 8" wheel, but note OEM wheels have more backspacing so they'll likely rub at full lock. I'm assuming your existing aftermarket wheels have less backspacing (aka negative offset)

There's no right answer, but the most budget-friendly option will be to watch the used market for either OEM take-offs or a set of aftermarket. Just make sure it's the diameter you need (18 or 20") and 8x170. If shopping OEM always ask if center caps are included -- if that matters to you.

Also it's not likely the lug nuts on your aftermarket wheels will work for OEM

Don't get fooled by the lower (65 PSI) max on the oversized tires vs the higher pressure (80 PSI) stock tires, many times the lower pressure larger tire will actually be rated at a higher load capacity that the smaller stockers, that’s exactly what my situation is between the stock 265/75R16 @ 80PSI and my upgraded 305/70R18 (65 PSI). The bigger fatter tire has a larger contact patch, which is where the load is supported, so even a lower pressure can carry more load there.
