Engine Won't Turn Over After Timing Chain Replacement
Any ideas what I might have done wrong? This was my first time doing a timing chain replacement. I also replaced the water pump and timing chain cover, but that seems irrelevant.
Now, with a breaker bar and all my strength, I cannot turn the engine, not even a bit. Also, the starter just clicks once when I try it.
I really hope I did not accidentally rotate the cam- or crankshaft without noticing, and am now hitting a valve ... is there any other explanation why it might not turn over? What might I have done wrong?
I guess I'll have to take it all apart and have a look what might be going on anyways, but if anyone has an idea what it might be to calm my nerves ...
Thanks in advance,
André
Edit: I forgot in my frustration; It's a 302 engine.
I don't see the alignment dots on the teeth, even thou you got the keys in the right spot. So I'm guessing the gear set is in backwards and the cam gear is pinched against the cam-retainer plate.
It's possible you may have tweeked the chain by cranking down on the harmonic balancer bolt. When you take it apart, place it on a flat surface in a circle and see if there's any gaps between the surface and the chain.
timing chain sets are cheap; replace it if it's suspicious.
Btw, stock 302s are non interference engines. The pistons can't hit the valves.
The parts are tough but you will want to check them on a flat plate. (I would inspect the #1 main cap (bent bolts) and possibly replace the timing set) (again)
It sure looks like they were assembled wrong side out
The dots?
His lower crank gear is bound up with the number 1 main cap IMO (that lower gear is supposed to have the flange butt up against the crank)

If anyone is curious about what carnage this dumb action caused, see photo:
Teeth missing from crank sprocket, cam thrust plate obliterated, and if you zoom in you can see two links of the chain really bent too.
I had already ordered a new timing set. An AutoZone about an hour from me has the camshaft thrust plate, and I'm heading out there now.
yep all in the process of learning, been there before. And as for learning, i learned something today myself

I had no idea this was true till today. You actually made me go back through my pictures because i was convinced i had bent pushrod pictures from a scattered 302. And in fact they are all straight. Now I am not afraid of my 320k mile timing chain letting go lol.
We all make mistakes
Fingers crossed and off to the wrecking yard for cheap parts
Good luck

Remember or see post 9, where I said to check the front main cap and make sure the bolts are not bent and the cap not mis aligned.
