ok so once again the truck is dead, but it was workgin fine on my way home today. as it stands i have no radio power very dim lights and hardley any head lights. and now a dead battery as i just coasted into my parkingspot out front. i would assume this to be the alternator. the hting that gets me ive never experienced as id turn on a power consuming device the truck would die even more when the turn signal was on every time the flasher clicked the truck bucked. is there something more to this than just the alternator?
It sounds to me like a chassis ground problem... I had an 82 150 that had similar issues and after throwing good money after bad for 2 months and checking everything else we found that the ground cable from the batt neg post to the engine had a bad spot in it that would only loose connection after it got hot. Electrical problems can mannifest in some strange ways.... If the alternator tests good you may want to check the GND cable.
yup ugly truck........i had the same deal on my 83 f-150........negative was barely holding on..........also, make sure the terminals on the battery are good and clean........
Hey motorhead!! how come every time I log onto the forums your truck is dead again... is it that old and worn out, do you have someone out to get you, is it time to look for a different truck and use this one as a donor??? I hope that you dont live next-door to any bowtie freaks or you'll never hear the end of it...
I'm not trying to make fun of you man, just starting to feel sorry for you..
Yes motorhead ot change ur alternater u have to take the air pump off.... if u live somewhere that does not require emissions tests u could leave it off like i did then its never in the way again.. also might want to check the connections on your voltage regulator. i put a new alternater in and i was only gettin 12 volts to the battery so i changed that and now its back to normal.
your right my truck is always dead, its all in the way i drive it. i figure once i replace that alternator i should be set for a while. with the engine running i have no voltage at teh battery, well at least i have no charge voltage the battery just slowly dies. its got one of those damn built in regulators so that makes the alternator another 60$ its great i think. i have it workse than livin gnext to a bowtie freak i work at a bowtie dealer. not bu choice it was just that i needed a job and they needed a worker. its ok if they didtn break i wouldnt have a job. and ive yet to see a chevy with 192,000 on it. id love to get a new truck and use mine as a donor but being an 18 year old on a bidget so to speak its not in the plans for another 6 months than i want to get a 2000 sporttrac and keep the f'er for the mud and runngin down trees adn ****. the story gets better while trying to get the alternator off last night i broke my craftsman ratchet with a cheater bar befor the bolt broke loose. tonight its pouring rain so i cant get it off. all i knwo is that alternator is $117 @ 15% above cost from mechanice so its just makgin me love my truck that much more. but the way i see it is i got goo compression and what not an dall teh res of the motor has been replaced or fixed it runs like a new truck when it runs.
So, You are workin behind enemy lines... that's okay, I have a bowtie buddy that works at the blue oval place....
Anyway, the reason that I am replying is to give you one of the most valuable mechanic secrets that you may ever get... You said that you broke one of your bolts off and shredded a Craftsman ratchet... the lesson that you will be learning today (Pay attention Grasshopper) is about penetrating oils and lubricants....
the first thing that you need to do is go out to your garage and throw away all the cans of WD-40 that you have.... okay, keep one for door squeeks and flooded distributor caps..
I have been educated in the last year about penetrating oils ....there is one that outshines everything else.. it is named.....(insert drumroll) ...........Kroil.. or Aero Kroil if you can find it in aerosol cans..... it is made by KANO labratorys.. I have no Idea where to buy it because I have a buddy that liberates it from work..
THIS STUFF IS AMAZING!!!!! I cant go on about it long enough.... even though I already have...
Let me just say that if You spray it onto 20 year old brake line fittings (You know, the ones that always twist the line off instead of unscrewing) and let it sit for 1 hour they will come right appart. I bought a junkyard leaf spring and they had just torched off the frame mounts so it was up to me to get the bolt out of the bushing... we sprayed the bolt on one end with WD-40 and the other with Kroil ..... when we took them appart the WD-40 one was wet (with penetrating oil) about 1/8" into the bushing... meaning that the lube only penetrated 1/8" in 24 hours... the one with the Kroil was wet all the way thru... and unscrewed with 2 wrenches... the one with WD-40 we had to torch off and drive out with an air hammer...
Allright, I know that I sound like an infomercial So I will quit.
The only place that I have ever seen the stuff for sale is in Gunsmithing Catalogs.
This stuff is far better than anything else.... Yes guys even better than PB Blaster...
ahh this kroil stuff sounds liek some good i like to use PB's blaster its good stuff eats rust. that means dont spray it on body rust just to see what happens or you may find your self with ahole in your fender no comment on how i know that all i ahve to say is my truck doesnt have any holes in it. i shredded the ratchet befor the bolt broke loose its still on there good and tight. i wonder if some *** didnt use an impact gun and cross thread it or somethign whatever the case its one expencive alternator. im going to remove it saturday being as i lack the garage that i need i work in my driveway hey, at leasts its paved. im almost going to say i dont liek workgin on my truck anymore but its so furfilling everytime it fixes itself with a alittle help form me.
