About 8 years ago I needed a new driveshaft for a 65 mustang I was redoing. Cost me $60.00 at a driveshaft shop. He used my ends and just welded them on a new tube and balanced. I was happy and it worked great. I broke the driveshaft on my 67 F100 yesterday. (don't ask how, lol) So I went back expecting to probably pay $100.00-$150.00. Wow, was I wrong! I found out he had retired and sold the business. The new guy wanted $421.00 to retube and balance my driveshaft. I said not today. I'll be back only if I have to. Needless to say I went to my favorite pick & pull and bought one for $20.00. Bought 2 new u-joints and changed my yoke so I'm only out $45 instead of $421.00.
I know prices are up on everything but jeewiz I thought that was extremely high. Anyway, I'm back on the road with $376.00 still in my pocket.
What do you do when there is not a drive shaft in a JY that will work?
I added a over drive on the back of my NP435 in my 81 F100 and no drive shaft would of been found.
The shop would not cut down the shaft I brought as it had a dent and could not say how true it would run with out a new tube.
It ran me around $300+ and fit like a glove.
As for the price, yes the parts have gone up a lot but you also have to look at what labor goes for now days and that is even higher.
I bet most was labor on that shaft.
