Replacing a temperature sending unit

I'm doing a coolant flush and it's the perfect time to renew my temperature sender. Do I use standard Teflon tape on the threads or some other thread dressing?

Teflon tape might not be good as you need a connection to the engine ground. Dilectric grease?

I see from the related threads that no thread dressing is needed. Simply remove and replace the unit.

What engine are we talking about again... I think we've been down that road before...LOL

I see what they are saying in the related threads. Good find.

Which temp sending unit are you replacing? If your truck is like my 89, you have 2. One is a sending unit and one is a temp switch.

Must be a later year thing, in 1986 they did not have two senders.

Dave, the EFI on the 302, doesn't it have two temp sending units, one for the gauge and one for the ECU ? My 86' has them.

I think we are assuming BigBlue2 is talking about temp sending probe in the intake manifold above #5 cylinder...but then again, we don't know what engine he has...maybe someday he'll add that info to his "sig"...

Does the expression “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mean anything to anyone?

Yep, it's broke else I wouldn't be fixing it. Right after warning me about an open thermostat it went **** up. Replaced the thermostat and the guage is not reading correctly now. I can tell because the radiator and top hose are hot now. Before the thermostat install it would not get hot like it's supposed to.

I have one of these coming:

Motorcraft F1SZ10884A - Motorcraft Coolant Temperature Sensors

When looking up the right part for my 6.9l I was surprised to see that this same sender is spec for many ford engines. Well maybe the gauges read different ranges for the higher op temp of the diesel? If my guage is bad then it might be a while till I get a round tuit.

It's not likely the instrument voltage regulator as it feeds my other guages and they are still working. So sender or guage. Loading the parts catapult as Karl would remark.
