1999 ranger 4x4 supercab 3.0 Is there anyway to get a regular key to work in a truck that uses the computer chip key, I lost one of my keys and ford wants $35.00 to program a new key and I have to bring the truck in to have it done.
This should work but don't point at me if it doesn't
OOPS: I read your message again and see that you lost one key. You may have to go back to the dealer to program the new key. This may make all the above a big PITA. It may be faster, easier to just drop the extra $23 or so.

Moms' brand new 98 Crown Vic came with 2 chip keys. I read the owners manual where it described how to program an extra key WITH an original. I put in the original and turned the ignition on TWICE as instructed. Then, I put in the new key and turned it TWICE and then started the car with it to confirm that it worked.
Check your owners manual for SIMILAR instructions.
Richard 4447 is correct; You have to take to a Ford dealer to program the computer chip key if you only have 1 key. You can program the extra key yourself if you have two or more.
Shop around different dealers since each dealer charge differently for key and programming.
Does anyone have any experience with Street Keys (http://www.streetkeys.com)? They have key blanks for $15 each plus $60 to cut & activate (if you have 1 key)?
My dealer wants $100 for the key.
