Crank no start. ECM. Help!??

I have an old uhaul truck that I just got.

96 f350 box truck.

When I bought it ran fine. Drove 350 miles or so.. ( home from buying, a couple of dump runs ). Aside from some hesitation on some shifts ( could be in my mind) no issues that I could tell. check engine light would come on and off occasionally .. I assumed that might be because there is no cat (I think). Did not attempt to read codes yet.

on last trip out the truck stalled a few hundred feet down my driveway and now cranks but no fire.

when ignition is turned on there is no action at fuel pump and the Check engine light doesn’t come on at all.

was going to replace fuel pump —. But I was able to verify that it pumps by applying f voltage directly to the pump.

got a computer from a salvage yard that changed nothing. (It is not the right part number etc but a Hail Mary shot. Was hoping it would at least start so I could move truck. )

any help appreciated. I’m a bit rusty on diagnostics.

If your truck is a non-california truck, then you have OBD-1 and the ECU doesn't monitor the catalytic converter so your check-engine light was from something else. Have you tried to retrieve the trouble codes?
Have you checked your fuses and ECU relay? Those would be the first things I would investigate first. Also check your ground lug near your driverside headlight.

Ford changed the fuse labeling in 1996.

1996 is OBD2
Sounds like it needs a fuel pump
Just because you can get the pump to run by applying voltage, does not mean it is building pressure
Some of them rupture the little hose that connects the pump to the module
That results in a running pump and no pressure, same if the one way valve in the pump malfunctions
Check the fuel pressure
That box truck probably has enough room to pull the fuel pump out, after moving the driveline over and out of the way

Thanks for the reply’s guys.

truck is OBD-I — eec-iv

i by passed the relay and with fuel pump running was able to spit out a fair amount of fuel at the fuel rail (did not have pressure tester available)

verified voltage at all the fuses in the engine bay. Just to check the ecm fuse is only hit when ignition is in in position……

I have voltage at the coil ..

I tried to start with the fuel pump running but no dice.

I wonder if there is a way to force the injectors to spit to get It to limp up my road so it easier to work on.

anything else I can check here. ?

Explain your 1996 being OBD1
U haul been rebadging these things or what?
1995 to 1996? like Chrysler used to do? When their cars had a birthday at the plant?
Okay, doesn't really matter
Explain got a computer from the salvage yard? Codes were what exactly?
If OBD1 on a 1995 for instance you will get 3 digit codes
Better just tow it to your house, ever put a noid light on one?
Now is the time
So tow it home or camp out down the road
Needs code test, noid lamp test and fuel pressure test
Check the spark

From what I’ve read in 96 vehicles over 8500 gvwr were still (or at least not required to be) OBD-II. This one is for sure still OBD-I.

This is the computer and the calibration code. It seems to be the hardest and most impossible to find to replace.

I tried to get one from the salvage yard fro
a same year/engine/trans combo but it looks like that one was obdii as the computer had a different connector completely. I did get one from a 93-f250-7.5-automatic…. But it is a different part number. (F3tf….I have to look again) and when I plugged it in there was no change in symptoms. I can return it still not not a big deal. Thought I could get it to run maybe badly but to start…. It alas… no.

if —
—-pressure good
—-spark good

then ??

Just because fuel is spitting out the test port does not mean there is enough pressure to start and run the engine. A simple test is spray a little bit of starting fluid in the intake then crank the engine. If it sputters to life then you know there is either not enough fuel or the fuel is bad. Not enough fuel could be pressure or as you stated the injectors may not be firing. You swapped in a different computer with the same results therefore the finger gets pointed at fuel quality/quality for me right now. If you have a test light you can clip it to the battery ground then touch one of the injector wires while cranking the engine. If the light pulses Off/On then you have more evidence it is a fuel issue and not injector firing.

A unicorn for sure being a 96 with EEC4
So, same thing, test codes and fuel pressure (rent a gauge or get one)(get an OBD1 scanner and perform KOEO and KOER tests)
Yes any 12 volt light bulb will work as a noid light
I mentioned noid so you would look it up
